Students are a busy bunch.
Our days can get so hectic between school, work, clubs and social lives that it can be difficult to keep up with what’s going on in our own lives, let alone what’s happening outside of them. That means keeping up with the news, keeping an eye on issues that have a direct impact on us, can be difficult or impossible to do.
That’s what we’re here to help with.
CMU Insider is a new student media publication dedicated to tackling the tough issues facing students today and placing them into a context that is easy to understand for a student on-the-go.
The world is more complex than ever for a college student, from managing rising tuition and student loans to finding out ways to stand out in a globally competitive economy. It can be daunting to get a grasp on the issues.
We’re here to help, though. CMU Insider is all about analysis and in-depth reporting. We’ll take the political, economic and administrative issues that impact you directly as a student, place them into context and shine a new light on them.
That begins today with our first slate of stories, which includes an analysis of how CMU tuition prices rose so much over the last decade, looks into policies at CMU that could violate a student’s First Amendment rights and the people behind Mount Pleasant’s November marijuana decriminalization proposal, and a breakdown of how the CMU athletics department has left reporters and the public in the dark on a star football player’s suspension and reinstatement.
You’ll also be able to check out the first in a series of stories by Arielle Hines detailing where each of your candidates for office stand on a variety of important issues, beginning today with higher education funding. Additionally, be sure to check out an opinion piece by Wyatt Bush laying out the case as to why raising the minimum wage might make for good politics but fails at making economic conditions better for young people. And take a look at our first What You Should Know post, a daily feature that lays out some of the most important and interesting news of the day so you can always make sure you’re on top of current events.
Interested in writing for us? We’re looking for any student, regardless of major or experience, who has something meaningful to say about the issues of the day and is willing to break those issues down for their fellow students. Does that sound like you? Then email firstname.lastname@example.org with your contact information so we can get you going.
Be sure to like us on Facebook and to follow us on Twitter @CMUInsider. And take a look around the site. Let us know what you think. What do you like? What can we do better? What would you like to see in the future? This is a new venture for us, and we’re learning what works and doesn’t as we go. We’d love to hear what you think.
And stay tuned. We’ll be updating the site regularly with new posts and stories that you should know about. Keep checking back. You don’t want to miss out.
